The bows in detail

  • DRAKE Dark Chocolate - 62-70 inch - Take Down Recurve bow - 18-38 lbs

The DRAKE Dark Chocolate is a 3-piece recurve bow consisting of a 20 or 24 inch riser and fibreglass reinforced limbs made of maple wood. The riser pleases with its appealing look in grey-brown tones reminiscent of dark chocolate. But of course it is not only the appearance that makes the Dark Chocolate riser an interesting starting point for a beginner's bow, because with its ergonomic shape and an available length of 20 or 24 inches, it not only lies well and securely in the hand, but with the appropriate limbs, also allows bow lengths of 62 to 70 inches. Due to the use of wood for the riser, it is relatively light and weighs only (approx.) 520g or (approx.) 765g. The equipment with sight, stabiliser and button bushing (5/16 x 24) finally leaves nothing to be desired and makes the riser also recommendable for more demanding shooters.

  • SET DRAKE Wild Honey - 62-70 inch - 18-40 lbs - Take Down Recurve Bow

The DRAKE Wild Honey is a 3-piece recurve bow consisting of a 20 or 24 inch riser and fibreglass reinforced limbs made of maple wood. The bow is particularly appealing because of its attractive appearance, which will convince almost anyone of the comfort of a wooden centrepiece. But of course it is not only the looks that make the Wild Honey an interesting beginner's bow. With a bow length of 62 to 70 inches and draw weights of 18-38 lbs (in 2 lbs increments), the Wild Honey is suitable for almost every (beginner) shooter. It also lies well in the hand and its light weight (approx. 930-1100g) makes it not only ideal for beginners, but also recommendable for more demanding archers due to its equipment with sight, stabiliser and button bushing (5/16 x 24).

  • DRAKE Alabaster - 62-70 inch - 16-42 lbs - Take Down Recurve Bow

The DRAKE Alabaster is a 3-piece recurve bow which is especially suitable for beginners. Consisting of a 20 inch or 24 inch long riser and combined with fibreglass reinforced limbs in black or wood look, the bow is appealing at first sight. Its appearance is determined by a classic real wood centrepiece in warm, light brown tones. Interrupted only by fine decorative stripes of reddish-brown wood.

But of course it is not only the appearance that makes the riser the ideal starting point for a beginner's bow, because with its ergonomic shapes it not only lies well and securely in the hand, but with the appropriate limbs, also allows bow lengths of 62 to 70 inches. Due to the use of wood as material for the riser, it is relatively light and has a weight of only 650g (20 inch) or 800g (24 inch). Equipped with a sight, stabiliser and button socket (5/16 x 24), this entry-level centrepiece is also interesting for more ambitious shooters, as a sight, button and stabilisers can also be fitted without any problems.

  • DRAKE Greyhound - 62-70 inch - 16-38 lbs - Recurve bow

The DRAKE Greyhound recurve bow inevitably casts a spell over everyone. Its appearance fascinates at first sight! The different shades of grey of the riser are reminiscent of the brindled coat of its namesake, the Greyhound, probably the most famous breed of greyhound in the world. The grain shows a variety of different shades of grey, from deep cool blue-grey to soft warm greige. This is made possible by the modern material Dymondwood, from which the handle is made. Dymondwood is a highly stable compound of several layers of wood, which are bonded together with epoxy resin under high pressure and as a result have the ideal characteristic for archery of absorbing vibrations excellently.

But of course it is not only the appearance that makes the Greyhound riser an interesting starting point for a beginner's bow. With its weight of only (approx.) 540g or (approx.) 710g, its ergonomic shape and an available length of 20 or 24 inches, it not only lies well and securely in the hand, but with the appropriate limbs allows bow lengths of 62 to 70 inches. This makes it possible to put together a bow that will convince anyone of the comfort of a wooden centrepiece. Also the equipment with sight, stabiliser and button socket (5/16 x 24) leaves nothing to be desired and makes the riser also recommendable for more demanding archers.

  • DRAKE Sepia - 62-70 inch - 16-42 lbs - Take Down Recurve Bow

If you are looking for a high quality, high performance bow to get started in the fascinating sport of archery, the DRAKE Sepia will be the perfect choice. As a starting point for your very own bow, the DRAKE Sepia riser already sets visual accents. Made of Dymondwood - a highly stable material consisting of several layers of wood and epoxy resin - it looks distinguished and elegant with its dominant colours of black, brown and grey. The side of the riser facing the shooter is in brown and grey tones, which in combination are reminiscent of the sepia tones of old photographs and radiate a certain cosiness with the recognisable wood look. The front of the riser, on the other hand, is in silk-matt black, which forms a nice contrast but still blends harmoniously into the overall picture.

Technically, the DRAKE Sepia riser is also impressive, as its functionality leaves little to be desired for an entry-level bow: Rounded, ergonomic shapes, a bow window that allows shooting with an arrow rest as well as directly over the shelf and equipped with sight, stabiliser and button socket (5/16 x 24). Furthermore, it is available in lengths of 20 or 24 inches, which, with the corresponding limbs, allow bow lengths of 62 to 70 inches, making the DRAKE Sepia interesting for beginners as well as for more ambitious shooters.

  • DRAKE Moss - 62-70 inch - 16-42 lbs - Take Down Recurve Bow

If you are looking for a high-quality, high-performance bow to get you started in the fascinating sport of archery, the DRAKE Moss is the perfect choice. As the starting point for your very own personal bow, the DRAKE Moss riser sets a visual accent. Made from Dymondwood - a highly stable material consisting of several layers of wood and epoxy resin - its dominant colours of green, brown and grey give it a warm and natural appearance. The side of the riser facing the shooter is in shades of green and brown, the combination of which is reminiscent of the colours of the forest and exudes a certain cosiness with its recognisable wood look. The front of the riser, on the other hand, is in silky grey, which creates a nice contrast but still blends harmoniously into the overall picture.

The DRAKE Moss riser is also technically impressive, as its functionality leaves little to be desired for an entry-level bow: Rounded, ergonomic shapes, a bow window that allows shooting both with an arrow rest and directly over the shelf and equipped with sight, stabiliser and button bush (5/16 x 24). In addition, it is available in lengths of 20 or 24 inches, which, with the corresponding limbs, allow bow lengths of 62 to 70 inches and make the DRAKE Moss interesting for beginners as well as for more ambitious shooters.

  • DRAKE Chroma - 66-70 inch - 18-38 lbs - Recurve Bow

The DRAKE Chroma comes as a 3-piece recurve bow with a high-strength, yet lightweight aluminium centrepiece painted in exciting colours. Whether single-coloured or strikingly two-coloured, the riser always cuts a fine figure and, at only 650g, is perhaps the lightest riser on the market. It was developed especially for young archers and is therefore a very good starting point for an optimal beginner's bow that is not too heavy and lies well in the hand. Of course, it has standard bushings for button, arrow rest and stabiliser and is thus also recommended for more demanding archers. It comes with the popular DRAKE Wild Honey screw-in limbs with a core of maple wood and laminates of black or white fibreglass.

Right-handed or left-handed?

Determination of the draw hand

The draw hand is the hand that pulls the string. This means that a right-handed bow is held in the left hand and drawn with the right hand.

Determining your personal draw hand has far less to do with whether you are left-handed or right-handed than you might initially assume. It is much more about determining the dominant eye. The dominant eye is used for aiming. This then automatically results in the draw hand.

The term dominant eye refers to the eye whose visual information is superimposed on everything. If a shooter tried to aim with the other eye, he would have to close the dominant eye.

There are two ways of determining the dominant eye: On the one hand, it is the eye that is generally favoured, for example when looking through the viewfinder of a camera, through the peephole or similar situations. On the other hand, there is a small exercise that can be used to determine the dominant eye beyond doubt:

  • The arms are stretched out and a triangle is formed with the thumbs and index fingers of both hands.
  • A small target is aimed at through the triangle, for example a socket or a cupboard knob. Focus on this object.
  • The hands are now slowly brought towards the face without taking the target object out of focus.
  • The triangle of thumb and index fingers will involuntarily tend towards one side of the face and this is where the dominant eye is located.

If the dominance of the eye and hand do not match, the bow should still be selected according to eye dominance. The arms can be easily retrained for the new draw hand, but not the eye.

More information on choosing the right type of bow, the right draw weight and the right arrows can be found here: A brief introduction to archery

Which bow length and which draw weight suits me?

Our recommendation for the bow length:

Body height / bow length:

  • under 120cm: 54 inches
  • 121-135cm: 58 inches
  • 136-150cm: 62 inches
  • 151-160cm: 64 inches
  • 161-167cm: 66 inches
  • 168-175cm: 68 inches
  • from 176cm: 70 inches

The basic principle is:
It is better to choose a slightly longer bow, as this is more forgiving of mistakes in shooting technique.

Our recommendation for the draw weight:

Draw weight for men:

  • 14-20 lbs. for youngsters up to 12 years of age
  • 20-28 lbs. for infrequent shooters
  • 28-32 lbs. for sporty men
  • 32-40 lbs. for active athletes

Draw weight for women:

  • 10-16 lbs. for young people up to 12 years of age
  • 16-24 lbs. for infrequent athletes
  • 24-28 lbs. for athletic women
  • 28-34 lbs. for active sportswomen

In general:
Girls tend to be 2 lbs less than boys.
Athletic, strong children tend to weigh 2-4 lbs more than petite children.
